N2  - Numerous authors1-4 have shown that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in children less than 3 years of age have potentially serious complications. Premature infants with chronic lung disease are particularly susceptible to RSV infections and have a high morbidity and mortality.5 The purpose of this communication is to report an outbreak of RSV infection in the Family Care Center (FCC), a transitional care nursery at the Children's Hospital, Denver.The FCC is an eight-bed unit associated with, but geographically separate from, the neonatal intensive care unit. The FCC cares for infants in the convalescent stages of uncomplicated prematurity and those with such illnesses as chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, hydrocephalus, seizures, and failure to thrive. The FCC staff encourages these infants' families (including healthy siblings) to visit frequently and participate as much as possible in their infants' care.
