Of late years there has been an emergence of philosophical papers in which the speaker has dwelt on certain aspects of research, teaching, and so forth. In casting about for a presidential address for the present meeting, I quickly became convinced that I would bore no one with a discussion of various aspects of liver disease or infants of diabetic mothers. Instead, it seemed appropriate to talk about ourselves, in view of the fact that 1959 marks the 30th birthday of the Society for Pediatric Research, its first meeting having been held on March 23, 1929. (This is our 29th meeting, one meeting having been omitted during the war.)
