The text goes well beyond covering nursing methods and techniques and attempts to incorporate the medical aspects of prematurity, including etiology, physiologic development, feeding, therapy, including a chapter on antibiotics, as well as pathologic conditions. A chapter is devoted to later physical and mental development. Portions of the book as stated appeared formerly under the title "The Premature Infant" by Julius H. Hess, M.D., and Evelyn C. Lundeen, R.N., in 1941 and 1949.There is much of a practical nature in the volume, and it is obviously written with a spirit of dedication and keen concern for the welfare of the premature. Breast-milk feeding is greatly stressed in its importance.
