TY - JOUR T1 - DEcreasing unnecessary radiation exposure for children AU - Moreno MA, Furtner F, Rivara FP Y1 - 2011/05/01 N1 - 10.1001/archpediatrics.2011.59 JO - Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine SP - 480 EP - 480 VL - 165 IS - 5 N2 - These diagnostic imaging tools can be very helpful to physicians in making a diagnosis. Although these tools can be very useful in some situations, it is recommended that they are not used routinely or in situations in which the diagnosis is already clear. A major risk of these medical diagnostic imaging procedures is that they lead to low-dose ionizing radiation exposure. The main concern for this radiation exposure is the risk for future cancer. Children and infants are at higher risk of this compared with adults because children's tissues are still developing and are thus more sensitive to radiation and because children have a longer life span, which may allow additional time for negative health effects to happen.
