Kirby and Marshall's letter in response to our recent report of findings from a case-control study of a cluster of gastroschisis cases in Washoe County, Nevada,1 suggests that our methodology did not follow “established guidelines” for cluster investigations.2- 3 Our full public health investigation of the cluster, which was not detailed in our article, included Poisson regression analysis comparing the cluster rate with gastroschisis rates in earlier periods and 4 other steps that followed guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.2 Perhaps the omission of these details led to the impression that our investigation did not follow suggested guidelines.
