TY - JOUR T1 - Routine assessment of temperature in healthy newborns: Lack of evidence for its clinical utility AU - Jaffe AC Y1 - 2009/03/02 N1 - 10.1001/archpediatrics.2008.556 JO - Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine SP - 283 EP - 283 VL - 163 IS - 3 N2 - Temperature is routinely measured in healthy newborns, with little evidence of its utility. One textbook1 discusses hypothermia and hyperthermia; 2 others do not.2- 3 Prominent guidelines4 recommend recording temperature every 30 minutes until the newborn's condition has remained stable for 2 hours and then observing the infant for signs of illness, including temperature instability; however, instability is not defined in these guidelines. This quality improvement study was designed to provide preliminary data about this issue.
