TY - JOUR T1 - LAnolin for sore nipples AU - Hagen RL Y1 - 1999/06/01 N1 - JO - Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine SP - 658 EP - 658 VL - 153 IS - 6 N2 - The authors refer to the topical ointment used in the study alternately as lanolin, lanolin cream, and modified lanolin. It is important for the reader to understand that lanolin is no longer a generic material. Owing to the potential for allergenic reactions and the presence of pesticide residues in some lanolins, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) wrote a new monograph for a modified lanolin. The purpose of this monograph was to describe a highly purified form of lanolin that is to be used where absorption through mucus membranes or ingestion might occur. This monograph became an official part of the National Formulary in May 1992. The USP specifically disallows the use of unmodified standard USP lanolin in any situation where absorption or ingestion may occur. Only modified lanolin should be used by breast-feeding mothers.
