TY - JOUR T1 - PRomoting adolescent smoking cessation is worth the effort—reply AU - Hurt RD, Croghan GA, Croghan IT, Patten CA, Beede SD, Wolter TD Y1 - 2001/03/01 N1 - 10.1001/archpedi.155.3.417 JO - Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine SP - 420 EP - 420 VL - 155 IS - 3 N2 - We certainly agree with Dr McFee and colleagues that research on interventions for adolescent smokers and actual interventions in medical practice are woefully lacking. Their findings graphically demonstrate the great disparity in clinical treatment-related articles for this serious medical condition compared with other conditions. Dr McFee and colleagues are correct; we were disappointed in the results of the nicotine patch treatment in this study. The abstinence rates were very modest and within the range of the cited natural history of smoking cessation among adolescents. Similar studies in adults have shown significant responses to nicotine patch therapy. We did encourage additional pharmacologic and behavioral treatments, especially since there was minimum behavioral treatment in this study.
