TY - JOUR T1 - YOur chest should be flat. Y1 - 1939/05/01 N1 - 10.1001/archpedi.1939.01990050221020 JO - American Journal of Diseases of Children SP - 1215 EP - 1215 VL - 57 IS - 5 N2 - This book is an attempt to coordinate anthropometric with clinical findings. In the main it appears that the thoracic index (anteroposterior diameter divided by transverse diameter, measured at the level of the nipples) tends to decrease from birth to adult life in normal chests, whereas in asthenic persons and persons with chronic pulmonary disease the normal decrease is arrested and the chest remains deep but narrow. Although the latter type of chest appears flat, it is in reality deep. Conversely, the broad, flat chest is normal. The author also attempts to correlate the deep, narrow chest with the childhood type of tuberculous infection. So many other factors than the shape of the chest must be considered, however, that his conclusions in this respect are not impressive. The book is written as though intended for laymen rather than physicians, but it will be of interest to those who are concerned with SN - 0096-8994 M3 - doi: 10.1001/archpedi.1939.01990050221020 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archpedi.1939.01990050221020 ER -
