Public concern for the health and welfare of children is a relatively recent development, dependent in large measure on the evolution during the past century of basic knowledge of causes of disease, of methods of prevention and treatment, of the processes of growth and development and of the effect of social and economic factors on the child's physical and emotional well-being.
