The four cases considered have been seen in the space of the past six months, and it appears that similar cases have been previously noted by physicians in Charleston, but have never been recorded as cases of beriberi. Vedder,1 an authority on the subject, stated that "no case of an infant affected by this disease has ever been reported" in the United States. The literature seems to contain no reference to local cases, and a recent article by Hoobler2 reiterates that beriberi does not appear in infants in this country. The only reference to beriberi in children in the United States is found in an article by Scott and Hermann,3 who SN - 0096-8994 M3 - doi: 10.1001/archpedi.1929.01930070064008 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archpedi.1929.01930070064008 ER -
