They should be able to take care of most illnesses and children. The pediatrician should decide when help by a subspecialist is needed. The parents should not be expected to be the "brokers" for various specialty services. A tentative list of conditions every pediatrician should be able to handle with confidence is included.(AJDC 1989;143:73-74)
