AB This volume comprises an analysis of growth data pertaining to some 4,000 children in the author's practice in the New York City area between 1949 and 1968. Children entered the "study" at birth and were therefore followed up for varying lengths of time. Virtually all the children were white (99%) and most (94%) were formula-fed. The first four chapters outline in modest detail the socio-demographic characteristics of the "study" population and patterns of health, as well as techniques used to measure length/height, weight, and head and chest circumferences. Chapters 5 to 8 examine these data cross-sectionally, looking for evidence of trends (secular change) over the 20 years and making comparisons with data collected in other studies. Incremental growth and velocity curves are examined in chapter 9. Effects of season, race, early feeding (breast vs formula), prematurity, illness, and multiple births on growth are briefly discussed in chapters 10 to 14.
