AB α1-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a normal human embryonic serum α1-globulin that disappears from the circulation in the perinatal period and is known to reappear in certain malignant states, especially in carcinoma of the liver and certain types of germinal cell tumors.1.2 In nonmalignant liver disease, AFP has been demonstrated in acute viral hepatitis by various techniques such as autoradiographic technique,3 double radial immunodiffusion,4 quantitative electroimmunodiffusion,1 and "sandwich" counterelectrophoresis method.5 We have used the counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) method to detect AFP and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in serum samples from children with acute viral hepatitis. This article reports the occurrence of AFP during the course of acute viral hepatitis and its relationship to HBsAg.Patients and Methods.—Fifty-one serum samples from 44 children, 28 boys and 16 girls aged 1 to 14 years, with acute viral hepatitis treated at the Department of Pediatrics,
