We are taught that parotitis associated with a fourfold rise in mumps V virus antibody is mumps. By these criteria, my patients had mumps. However, the data that I reviewed relating to myxovirus infections indicate that these criteria are no longer adequate. It was my hope that the data presented would stimulate the type of cooperative study suggested by Dr Pachman, cooperation between physicians in practice and virologists to solve the practical problems of the diagnosis and prevention of mumps.
