During this period, he had also developed repeated gingival infections and recurrent submandibular swelling which responded to antibiotics and antiseptic mouth washes. On the day of referral, a blood count obtained by his pediatrician was reported as follows: hemoglobin level, 8.1 gm/100 cc, and white blood cell count (WBC), 70,998, with an abnormal differential count.
