AB THERE IS some evidence that thyroid disorders are unduly frequent among patients with Down's syndrome.1-4 However, this association remains an epidemiological problem. This thought plus a recent encounter with children having Down's syndrome who suffered from goiter prompted us to perform this clinical study.Methods 
    Three children with Down's syndrome and goiter were known to us. One of them was living at home. The other two were residents of a state institution. Careful manual examination for thyroid enlargement was performed in 306 other patients with Down's syndrome from the same institution and in a control group of 327 institutionalized individuals without Down's syndrome but with various etiologies for their mental retardation. Patients in this latter group were of similar age, residing in the same quarters, and receiving the same diet as the syndrome group.
