As pediatricians, we are trained to approach disease from a medical perspective—diagnosing illness, treating symptoms and guiding patients back to health. But what can be done when a disease ravages whole nations, affecting the lives of millions of children? We are forced to widen our focus, look beyond the traditional medical model, and examine the socioeconomic components of health.
