RT Journal A1 Roy-Bornstein C T1 My baby rides the short bus: The unabashedly human experience of raising kids with disabilities JF Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine JO Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine YR 2011 FD June 1 VO 165 IS 6 SP 575 OP 575 DO 10.1001/archpediatrics.2011.70 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archpediatrics.2011.70 AB Like most pediatricians, I care for many families of children with various disabilities. In some, I was the one to deliver the initial bad news. Other families came to me having already had their child's disability diagnosed. I also am the mother of a teenager with a traumatic brain injury. I have done my time arguing with insurance companies over coverage for durable medical goods and paying out of pocket for uncovered mental health services. Either way, I like to think that I have been there, done that, and that I am an ally and an advocate for my patients, a provider of solid evidence-based information, a caregiver, and a support. Since being humbled by reading My Baby Rides the Short Bus, I can only hope that this is true.
