One of the great appeals of pediatrics and related professions is the opportunity to do something that can make a lasting difference in the life of a child. The article by Sandler and colleagues1 on a preventive intervention for bereaved families in this issue of the Archives offers such an opportunity. Classic articles like “Protecting Adolescents from Harm”2 demonstrate, in cross-sectional analyses, that a strong connection between parent and child is protective against a wide range of health-risk behaviors. Because they are experimental and longitudinal, the findings of Sandler and colleagues clearly demonstrate that strengthening families and children can have long-lasting effects on both parental and child mental health and functioning.
