Recognition of these facts has led to national guidelines to control risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus,2 dyslipidemia,3 and hypertension,4 and to the concept that recognition, treatment, and control of risk factors are important to prevent cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality.2- 4 In fact, the decline in cardiovascular disease mortality over the last 50 years has been attributed to both better control of risk factors and better intensive care in the treatment of acute events.5
