RT Journal A1 Jaffe AC T1 Routine assessment of temperature in healthy newborns: Lack of evidence for its clinical utility JF Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine JO Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine YR 2009 FD March 2 VO 163 IS 3 SP 283 OP 283 DO 10.1001/archpediatrics.2008.556 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archpediatrics.2008.556 AB Temperature is routinely measured in healthy newborns, with little evidence of its utility. One textbook1 discusses hypothermia and hyperthermia; 2 others do not.2- 3 Prominent guidelines4 recommend recording temperature every 30 minutes until the newborn's condition has remained stable for 2 hours and then observing the infant for signs of illness, including temperature instability; however, instability is not defined in these guidelines. This quality improvement study was designed to provide preliminary data about this issue.
