RT Journal A1 Liebelt EL, Qi K, Harvey K T1 USe of respiratory syncytial virus testing could safely eliminate many sepsis evaluations—reply JF Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine JO Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine YR 1999 FD December 1 VO 153 IS 12 SP 1309 OP 1310 DO UL http://dx.doi.org/ AB We thank Dr Baptist and Ms Louthain and Drs Antonow and Byington for their comments regarding our recent article.1 We would like to reiterate our recommendations that previously healthy infants with clinical bronchiolitis may not need further laboratory evaluation for serious bacterial infections. These recommendations were based on our retrospective data and available literature only. Unfortunately, neither our study nor any other study in the literature has definitively answered the questions of which infants do need further testing or whether infants with bronchiolitis have a higher risk of bacteremia, urinary tract infection, and meningitis than children without bronchiolitis.
