RT Journal T1 The world of the autistic child: Understanding and treating autistic spectrum disorders JF Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine JO Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine YR 1999 FD June 1 VO 153 IS 6 SP 659 OP 659 DO UL http://dx.doi.org/ AB Given the infrequency of autism, it is surprising how many books, articles, movies, and television programs feature children or adults with autism. This disorder, which is characterized by social disability, has become a social phenomenon. Parents of children with autism need guidance in understanding their child's condition. Clinicians also need help in this area. Parents are often very well informed about standard and alternative treatments, and expect their physician to be able to advise them in their decisions related to the child's care and to advocate for them with schools and insurance companies.
