The final decade of the 20th century was marked by a paradigmatic shift in caring for children with ongoing conditions. This shift reflected the changing epidemiology of chronic health conditions and was based on emerging research about their implications and consequences. Earlier research focused on improving survival and disease-specific care and policies. But by the decade's end, there was growing appreciation of the common issues faced by these children and their families.
