A case of a 21-month-old child with hepatic abscess due to Entamoeba histolytica is presented. Serological testing included the soluble antigen fluorescent antibody test and immunoelectrophoresis.

A review of the world literature for infants and children with this entity suggests three observations: (1) Wherever the disease is indigenous among adults, it must be considered in the differential diagnosis when children present with dysentery and hepatomegaly. (2) There seems to be an increased prevalence of the childhood condition in southern Africa and Latin America. (3) Children less than 3 years old have hepatic abscess more frequently than older children.
