One of the most heinous crimes known to man is the abuse of unborn children by taking drugs during pregnancy. Therefore, I was surprised to read the article by Hofkosh et al1 in the June issue of the Archives.
The only proper place for a child who has drug-addicted parents is out of the home.
Hofkosh et al suggest some short-term hope for a child with drug-addicted parents who have social support, but I predict that, in the long run, the child is doomed. I predict that any support of drug abuse during pregnancy will encourage drug abusers to have more children and that some, if not most, of our support will be diverted to buy drugs.
What is unusual about the June 1995 issue of the Archives is the editorial by Howard and O'Donnell,2 who seem delighted with the study. The editorial seems ludicrous when the authors
