ABSTRACT

Dr Moyer writes that he disagrees with my editorial completely but also characterizes it as "thoughtful." Without knowing exactly how he disagrees, it is difficult for me to respond fully to his concerns. In what way(s) do half of all Americans think that I am the problem? I did not write that anyone that disagrees "is always wrong." I do agree (as I wrote) with the idea that simple solutions to complex problems are generally wrong.

I agree with much of what Dr Auten suggests, although I am skeptical that local charities can make up the difference if tax support (either at the state or local level) is withdrawn. Fathers, to the extent they are able, ought to support their children. However, I hope that we can someday reach the point where young men would be anxious to delay fatherhood while they pursue meaningful educational and career opportunities,
