Over the past several years, a variety of encyclopedic works in the area of pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology have been published, ending an era of dependence on shorter texts that were often written by a single author. The newer texts generally depend on a large corps of experts to provide individual chapters, while the smaller texts tend to provide less information but more continuity and how-to advice. The third edition of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology is a pleasant compromise between these extremes, incorporating a more personal style into a truly comprehensive text.
The primary authors of this volume continue to be Charlotte Anderson, Valerie Burke, and Michael Gracey. J. Ranier Poley has added a large section dealing with pediatric liver disease. Other contributors provided single chapters, including an excellent discussion of bile salt metabolism and its contribution to disease by Piccoli, Maller, and Watkins.
