I read with growing consternation the article by Joffe1 in the July issue of AJDC concerning condom use. While I applaud the effort to assess and promote responsible behavior, I am convinced that very few people would agree that throwing up our hands and instructing our children in how to "correctly" have sex is the appropriate responsible behavior to promote. I think that most of us would agree intuitively that those who most need instruction in condom use are least likely to get it and that with a reasonably high failure rate with condoms, we probably should not promote this as effective protection from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. While I find most articles in the Archives insightful, I am afraid that I missed the point with this one.
