The Adolescent Pelvic Examination: An Update of a Successful Program FREE

The Adolescent Pelvic Examination Workshop conducted at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Elk Grove Village, Ill, has become an increasingly popular segment of this gathering. These workshops serve as an integral part of the academy's effort to emphasize the importance of the pediatrician's role in the continuity of medical care for the adolescent and young adult.1

The success of these workshops was attributable to the use of the gynecological teaching assistant (GTA), who afforded the participant with immediate feedback during the performance of the pelvic examination.2 Although the academy did not introduce the live teaching model until 1986, Holzman et al,3 Kretzschmar,4 and others reported their positive experiences with this method for teaching medical students.

The Committee on Scientific Meetings increased the number of workshops to four to allow greater participation and to increase the opportunity to experience the value of this
