ABSTRACT

Recent dramatic television depiction of starving infants and children in Somalia has reawakened our concern for the effects of malnutrition on the developing brain. This monograph is an outgrowth of a Nestle nutrition workshop held and organized by the authors to bring clinical neuroscientists and pediatricians together with researchers in basic developmental neurobiology. Publication was delayed slightly owing to "reasons beyond our, Nestles', and the publishers' control," Evrard states. Nonetheless, the book represents a major contribution to the emerging literature in this field.

It is composed of 20 chapters by leaders in the fields of normal and abnormal brain development, the role of peroxisomes in brain development, gene-mapping techniques, and developmental neurochemistry (eg, the nature of myelin basic protein, lipids, neurotransmitters, and alcohol). Brain circulation and the use of positron emission tomography are effectively reviewed by Hans Lou and Joseph Volpe.
