Sir.—We read with interest the recent RADIOLOGICAL CASE OF THE MONTH on the occurrence of ovarian cysts in the newborn infant.1
In the last five years we have observed nine patients with ovarian cysts; seven of these cysts were diagnosed before birth by prenatal echography. In four patients there was a spontaneous involution of the cyst, while in three others an operative treatment was preferred.2 The last two patients, although they had large cysts, were successfully treated by ultrasound-guided transabdominal puncture.
Patient 8 had at birth a cyst measuring 5.4×4×4 cm on echographic examination that originated from the right ovary. Puncture of the cyst on day 15 resulted in the collection of 38 mL of citrine fluid and a residual cyst of 2.8×1.8×10 cm. At age 4 months, the infant was thriving, results of the clinical examination were normal, and the ovarian cyst was further reduced to
