In Reply.—The most surprising aspect of my recent article in The Editorial Board Speaks, "Thoughts on Retiring: Five Years Later," was the large number of people who wrote to comment or to give their own experience. Dr Whipple has done an excellent job of plugging the holes left by me plus adding her own shrewd observations of things yet to come.
Of the people who wrote me, most felt that the article was stimulating and was a good representation of their own experiences. Many noted the absence of any reference to a wife (there isn't any). Others wondered what would be the result if many of the things noted after retirement should occur before retirement (you waited too long). Lastly, it was lamented that if you were retired, you "no longer could have a day off."
