Sir.—The letter by Finney1 in the October 1986 issue of AJDC proposes that the proper functioning of cellular telephones in automobiles be made contingent on seat belt use. Although this idea may increase seat belt use, it would affect only a small portion of the driving population.

A more practical way to increase seat belt use, and one that would affect a majority of automobile drivers, would be to make the functioning of the automobile's radio or tape deck contingent on proper use of seat belts. If the seat belts are not worn properly, no music.

This simple and inexpensive intraconnection would probably increase seat belt use dramatically.
