Sir.—In a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, Feldman et al1 demonstrated that there were fewer pain attacks in children with simple recurrent abdominal pain who were given dietary fiber. This gives me the opportunity to mention a study on the same subject with quite another result.2 On the basis of the assumptions (1) that recurrent abdominal pain in children is parallel to irritable bowel syndrome in adults and (2) that bulk preparations have a possible beneficial effect in adults,3-5 an investigation was undertaken on 40 children between 3 and 15 years of age who had recurrent abdominal pain. The inclusion criterion was at least two attacks of recurrent abdominal pain over the last six weeks of sufficient severity to affect activity. Children with organic causes of pain were excluded. The study was carried out as a double-blind, randomized, controlled investigation on the effect of ispaghula husks (Vi-Siblin
