ABSTRACT

Dr Thompson provides a practical manual for various health care professionals who provide care to sick newborn infants. Diagnostic approaches, management protocols, descriptions of techniques, and forms are those used at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, Minneapolis. The general organization is to treat procedures and techniques used in newborn intensive care in the first part of the manual, and common medical disorders are covered in the latter part. Coverage is broad, but not complete by any means. The attempt to use an outline form is often defeated by the amount of material presented under each heading. Secondary outlines are occasionally provided as illustrations. The material presented is mostly useful, particularly that in the 155 illustrations and 70 tables. However, the organization and cross-referencing make it difficult to use as a bedside manual.
