Meningitis with brain abscess formation is extremely uncommon in the neonatal period, as is recurrent meningitis.
We describe an infant with three episodes of bacterial meningitis, initially accompanied by multiple brain abscesses. A defect in the cribriform plate was demonstrated by radioisotope techniques and surgically corrected. This case highlights the difficulty of establishing the cause of recurrent meningitis in infants and demonstrates the use of diagnostic radioisotope techniques to detect cribriform plate defects in infancy.
Report of a Case.—The patient was a previously normal 4-week-old female infant who had three left-sided seizures during a 24-hour period. She was afebrile and seemed otherwise well. Results of the physical examination were normal, except for bilateral otitis media. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis disclosed 643 WBCs per cubic millimeter, with 34% polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
