ABSTRACT

As the editorship of the Journal changes hands, we take this opportunity to express the appreciation of the editors to Gilbert B. Forbes, MD. As its editor-in-chief, Gil has brought to the Journal the skills of a broadly based scholar, a perceptive eye for statistical methods, and a demanding taste for precision in grammar and brevity in expression. For those of us so fortunate as to have worked with him on the Journal, these have been pleasant days, sharing his wisdom, stories, and good humor while learning the elements of good writing from a master. And how we've enjoyed Madge Ewell's tea and tactics! Work on the Journal has taken enormous amounts of Gil's time, disposed as he is to make each article meet his high standards. Many are the papers he's held for several weeks to "stew about" some item that wasn't just right to him—extra time not
