Subacute bacterial endocarditis is primarily a disease of young adults in which the valvular structure of the heart, previously damaged or stressed especially by rheumatic valvulitis, becomes infected. This disease is rather uncommon in the first decade of life, and childhood cases are usually associated with congenital heart disease rather than rheumatic processes. A number of microorganisms have been implicated in this disease. Most noteworthy are the viridans group streptococci, Staphylococcus epidermidis, diphtheroids, and other groups of streptococci.
Group G β-hemolytic streptococci are occasionally found as normal flora in the throat1 and in the female genital tract.2 In as much as Group G streptococci have been implicated as infecting agents of the lung, blood, and wounds,3-4 a review of the literature shows only six cases of subacute endocarditis, all of which occurred in adults.4-5 The present report deals with a pediatric case of subacute bacterial endocarditis
