ABSTRACT

Some children have read all the easy-to-read books, but find the wide range of juvenile fiction awesome or beyond their comprehension. This list is aimed at bridging that gap. It is particularly suitable for children aged 6 to 8, yet it may be helpful with older or younger readers who have similar reading abilities.

Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown (Harper, 1964). When Stanley is squashed flat by his bulletin board he has some bizarre adventures, eg, he is mailed to a friend.

By George, Bloomers! by Judith St. George (Coward, 1976). Hannah wishes for bloomers so she can skate like the wind on the canal, or walk on stilts, or be the first up the tree house rather than last. This delightful story is set in 1852.

How to Read a Rabbit, by Jean Fritz (Coward, 1959). Stephen becomes a member of the animal lending library and works to become
