ABSTRACT

At first glance, this book appears to add little to the growing number of volumes published in the past decade dealing with handicapped children. We have already had Kershaw's "classic" from the United Kingdom and several American texts that have attempted to cover much the same field. What need is there for yet another book that attempts to strike the delicate balance between superficiality and the extensive medical details offered in any standard pediatrie text? The fact is that none of the other contenders have succeeded as well as Grace Woods in doing so. Her approach combines the style and lucidity of an Illingworth or MacKeith, with the authority drawn from extensive experience that characterized Kershaw's important contribution.

Accordingly, this volume is deceptive. Although there are no tables of "data" as such, there are numerous photographs and tables of other kinds. And, while the treatment may first appear to be
