ABSTRACT

Stockholm.—This year Sweden has general and community elections. The needs of children and parents are some of the most important items. All parties have programs for building many more day nursery centers, so as to be able to offer admittance to approximately 50% of the preschool population. A six-hour workday for parents with children less than 3 years of age has been proposed by the conservative parties; mothers who want to stay at home with their small children will be offered economic subsidies. The social-democrats (now in power) have proposed an extension of the "leave" after childbirth from the present 7 months to 12 months to be used when wanted before the child is 7 years old.

The infection rate in children in day care centers has been studied by Dr Katherine Strangert, Karolinska Institute Medical School, Stockholm. She found children less than 2 years of age in day
