This is a new monograph in the series of books on histopathology and one of the few detailed accounts of the pathological characteristics of the human placenta. Although the title suggests that only microscopic anatomy is considered in this volume, it actually considers a great deal of the macroscopic pathological aspects of this organ.
Philippe is well prepared to write a comprehensive text on this topic, having had a very large amount of material at his disposal and having published detailed accounts of the pathological findings of abortuses in collaboration with the cytogenetic studies of the Boués. The book presents in a systematic fashion the techniques of gross and microscopic examination of the placenta and then, in considerable detail, the various lesions of amnion, chorion, villi, cord, multiple pregnancy, mole, and choriocarcinoma. The particular value of this book is twofold. First, there are many excellent illustrations, 256 altogether, a number
