There is of course a modicum of truth in Dr. Ghadimi's somewhat vitriolic castigation of the editorial policies of the main pediatric journals and his carefully guarded laudation of the "throwaway" publications. Since his communication was proffered as a contribution to the American Journal of Diseases of Children and because the present Chief Editor has occupied this position for only a matter of weeks, it is natural that Dr. Forbes should have referred it for comment to his predecessor.
I, the retired editor of the Journal, like Dr. Ghadimi, have a deep interest in medical communication. The "referral for comment" has created a welcome opportunity to express in writing some of the responsibilities of those who guide the policies of a journal and of thorns and briars which so often create problems by obstructing the pathway of those who write.
First, a few comments on the foregoing article.
