The first edition of this book was published in 1954. The major revisions in this edition are in the chapters on prevention of infection, including updated information on immunizations, and the addition of a chapter entitled "On Bringing Out the Best of a Child." As the authors state in the preface to the first edition, it is an effort "to give as complete an account as possible of the management of the child in his first five years." The book is intended for parents. I found most of it valuable, but I do have reservations about some parts. Unless the physician is aware of the content of a young parent's library resources, he may find his counsel more confusing than supportive. I would therefore urge a reading of this book before recommending it to patients.
The first six chapters discuss planning and preparation for a child, and newborn care and
