A total of 3,278 consecutive newborns were examined clinically for instability of the hip. Thirty children (9.2/1,000) with 42 unstable hips were detected. All were treated with an aluminum malleable brace. The brace was worn continuously for six weeks. At that time the hip was then examined clinically; if stable all restrictions were discontinued. At three months and one year the child was reexamined and re-x-rayed. All were normal clinically and roentgenographically except for one child with a diagnosis of gargoylism.
