The need for educating parents about the nature of a child's handicap is generally acknowledged. Numerous studies have documented the deficiencies in parent understanding, and several possible consequences of this shortcoming have been described. Many pediatricians, due to lack of both training and time, find they are less effective as health educators than they would like to be. Written materials as an adjunct to oral explanations are likely to prove of considerable benefit in many instances. This report offers the pediatrician a ready compilation of currently available health educational materials—116 items, grouped by category of disability, with complete addresses—suitable for parents and others involved in the care of handicapped children.
