The peculiar benign and regressive pathologic variants of Wilms' tumor and neuroblastoma are emphasized and related to the enhanced survival observed in these tumors when they appear in the newborn or very young infant. There is a tendency toward benignity or regression in other congenital neoplasms such as sacrococcygeal teratoma and congenital leukemia. It is, thus, theorized that specific repressive influences may be maximally exerted on an inborn cancer genome in very early life. Their effect would serve to modify or suppress the full development or progression of malignant disease at this time.
