Differential Diagnosis in Pediatrics: A Card-Sort System of Symptom Analysis.

ABSTRACT

The diagnostic system consists of (1) a set of 270 numbered cards, each corresponding to a disease symptom and each containing in arithmetical order 800 Arabic numbers; the numbers refer to disease conditions the symptoms of which are identified by a business machine punch technic; and (2) a 209 page booklet which gives the card number corresponding to the 270 symptoms and an index list of 743 disease conditions. The card, therefore, has a space for 57 additional conditions which presumably may be added in the future.

To use the system, cards are selected which relate to two or more important observations on the patient. The cards are superimposed with edges aligned so that light shines through the holes corresponding to the diseases that the child could have. The hole numbers guide the user to suggested diagnoses in the booklet index.
